Psalm 127:1-2 AMP
“EXCEPT THE Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; except the Lord keeps the city, the watchman wakes but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to take rest late, to eat the bread of [anxious] toil—for He gives [blessings] to His beloved in sleep.”
This is one of my favorite scriptures in the Bible. For you workaholics and control freaks out there, this is your verse if you want to get some peace and rest; also for you who are busy all day long and dead tired at the end of the day from worry, anxiety and stress.
Throughout the Bible, God tells us, well actually commands us, to not be anxious or worried. The Amplified Bible uses the term often “Fret Not Yourself”. That cracks me up but it is so true. We are the ones “fretting” and causing ourselves to “fret”, not someone else or our circumstances who/which we like to blame. God never said He is going to remove your anxiety; He tells you to do it. Your anxiety is caused by fear which is a spiritual attack on you meant to kill you, steal your joy from you and destroy your life. (see FEAR tab)
In this passage God is not saying don’t work. God wants you to work and there are a ton of verses in Proverbs about what happens to a lazy man (it ain’t good). What He is saying is don’t work yourself to death because you are anxious and scared over money or whatever. Maybe you are worried about a family member or someone close to you, about their health or safety. Maybe you are worried about your own health or safety. It is in your mind all day long. You dwell on it and it wears you out.
You can only do so much and the doing is taking action but not action with worry. Worrying only destroys your peace, your health and your mind. You are NOT ultimately in control. This scripture tells us in the end what you do is in VAIN. This really hit home with me because I am a control freak.
You want to control your world and the people in it (money, health and relationships) because that gives you a sense of security. But God says it’s all in VAIN. It is a false security. You can’t control anything in reality. “Except the Lord builds the house……except the Lord keeps the city.”
We are also taught to put God first in everything. That includes WHO controls your world. Look to Him for security and not yourself. God has us do this for our sake not His, so He can take care of us and bless us.
Trying to control your life creates anxiety and stress. You are putting too much stress on yourself to manage and control your world when the TRUTH IS (and it sets you free) that God and God alone controls your world. Your efforts are in VAIN. Remember Jesus says His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
This passage isn’t saying sit back and do nothing. It is saying quit stressing over what you are doing and start adding trust into the mix. It says when you TRUST God He gives you Blessings in your sleep. Which means He blesses you outside of your own effort.
Only Trust and Faith in God working for you 24/7/365 opens the door for Him to go to work on your behalf. Otherwise you are just spinning your wheels in your Stress Mobile.
Try Psalm 127:1-2 on and stop stressing because that is only killing you. Plus you are probably contributing to the stress of others who are around you and having to deal with you.
Meditate on this today and remember God is with you and working for you 24/7/365 and longing to Bless you 24/7/365 if you just Trust and Believe.
Here is your paraphrased verse to meditate on (see Cornerstone Post).
“(YourName), it’s crazy for you to work your tail off from sun-up to sun-down all week long stressing over (__________), because only God builds your house. It’s useless for you to keep stressing and worrying over (___________) because only God protects you and your loved ones. God wants to give you Blessings if only You Trust and Believe in Him and his good plan for You. Today I Trust you God. I am tired. I am looking forward to seeing the Blessings You Want To Give Me in my Sleep. Thank You God!”
